Why are there more craters on the moon than Earth?
Actually these black spots on the moon are nothing else but craters. But what's the exact reason behind the existence of such huge craters on the moon. Let's explore the reason behind it.
The Moon lacks a thick atmosphere unlike the Earth as the gravity of the moon is significantly less than that of the Earth. It's about one sixth the gravity of the Earth(only 1.67 N). Due to such minute gravity, the atmosphere there is thin as the low gravity can't hold the molecules of the gases and they escape to the space.
When the meteors enter the atmosphere of the Earth, they face an immense friction with the atmospheric air and hence get burnt. So they mostly don't collide with the Earth's surface.
But the case is different in context of the Moon. when the meteors enter the thin atmosphere of the Moon, they don't experience such enormous friction and hence don't get burnt. when such gigantic meteors strike the surface of the Moon, huge sized craters are formed unlike the Earth. These gigantic craters can be seen from the Earth in the form of black spots.
